“Purpose-driven Leader”

Susan K. Maue, Managing Director, PharmaLex, took the reins of PharmaLex US in July 2020 after a 20+ year career in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Susan brought PharmaLex her passion for consulting and building strong teams committed to working with pharma, biotech, and MedTech companies to bring life-changing products to patients. This patient focus guides Susan and her team each day – knowing that there is a parent, a child, a friend, a loved one – who benefits from the work of PharmaLex. She takes pride in knowing that although one will never see the name PharmaLex on a product label, the PharmaLex team is behind the scenes guiding research for product discovery and development; sharing expertise that helps clients to navigate the ever-changing regulatory landscape; and providing services that ensure the quality, consistency, and safety of healthcare products brought to market.

Over the last year, Susan has brought increased attention to product commercialization, because product development and approval don’t guarantee patient access. By bringing the right experts to the table who understand the complexity of reimbursement and the importance of having real-world evidence to drive payer and prescriber decisions, PharmaLex supports clients in bringing their products to market, helping to improve lives around the globe.

Transformation comes from inspiring a team to aim higher and to actively drive progress. When assuming her role as Managing Director, Susan shared the following quote, reminding everyone that leadership is not about placement on an org chart. “Leadership is pursuit – pursuit of excellence, of elegance, of truth, of what’s next, of what if, of change, of value, of results, of relationships, of service, of knowledge, and of something bigger than ourselves.” ~Unknown

Susan engages with women across industries and throughout her community, serving as a mentor in formal and informal relationships. She also participates on various leadership panels at conferences and welcomes opportunities to speak at local schools. She loves inspiring others, particularly young women, to aim higher. One of the main questions that Susan receives is, “how difficult was it to choose a career over family?” The short answer – she didn’t have to. This is a point that Susan regularly emphasizes to young women who struggle with this – if you want both, you don’t have to choose. It is possible. Susan has invested heavily in her career but did so with a husband of 22 years and their four children. A few key points she shares:

• It does take hard work, and while it is not ever easy – it is well worth it!

• Find a company that values what’s important to you (i.e., family) and allows enough flexibility that enables you to balance both.

• Remember that quality is more important than quantity.

• Don’t think you have to do it all. By the time Susan’s children turn 12, they are responsible for cooking dinner. Real, well-balanced dinners. And for a small payment and a big thank-you, they are thrilled – and you can see that they take a lot of pride in contributing to the family in such an important way!

Some of the biggest challenges that life sciences companies face --- namely getting products to market in compliance with government regulations – are being worked on at PharmaLex.
